Having completed a number of photo-realistic paintings I wanted to explore more loose painting styles in Photoshop. I created a number of new paint brushes and began testing them. I then decided rather than scribbling with them, it would be more interesting to try to paint a character with the new tools. I found an interesting still of Heath Ledger playing the Joker in Batman Dark Knight and started to experiment.
The image you see above took 3 hours, most of which I spent adjusting the brush settings for certain effects such as the face paint texture. Many of the techniques I developed in this piece I now use regularly in my work.
