This story was the first that I had written with the intention of producing a series of illustrations. It revolves around the idea of artificial memory in a world where thoughts are downloaded and processed for everyones safety.
The story is centred around a young man who approaches a girl he finds attractive and discovers information about his past that he can not remember. Over the course of the story the young man uncovers the reason for his memory loss and he finds himself on the run from the system in place to protect society.
The visual style of this story was intended to be a modern day with subtle futuristic enhancements. I wanted the technology used to be the next step from what we use today; believable but more advanced than you would expect today. The costume designs reflect that also. I went for modern clothing such as jeans jackets etc.. but added little features give it futuristic quality.
I did numerous storyboards and concept paintings for this project before deciding on a final sequence. I had to research certain technological and biological aspects of the story in order to understand how the technology could potentially work.
When I had decided which illustrations I wanted to produce I headed out with my camera and took the necessary reference photographs. My friends Daniel Finn and Charley Roach helped me out on two separate evenings modelling as the lead characters.
In the end I only had time to complete 3 of the final illustrations, but I really enjoyed going through the whole process of coming up with an idea, writing it out, storyboarding the action, designing the environments and costumes, shooting reference with actors and finally coming up with the finished pieces at the end. One of the things I tried for the first time in this project was integrating 3D models with real photographs. This is something I have explored much more in recent projects.
