The idea for creating these illustrations was to show that the iPad, which has transformed digital comic book distribution, has also changed the way comics can be drawn. Using a £4.99 app, I was able to pencil, ink and colour a number of iconic comic book characters including an iconic pose of Marvel's Incredible Hulk (originally by Bryan Hitch) and an original illustration of the BBC's 11th Doctor Who, played by Matt Smith.
The fun thing about this project was getting the opportunity to try and reproduce the techniques that comic masters have been using for years with only my finger in this new medium. I began each illustration with a pencil sketch of the scene and then used a black sharp brush to 'ink' the outlines. I then used a series of layers beneath and above the inked outlines to create various colouring effects. I was amazed at how well the images came together, in particular how sharp the images where when I exported them as a higher resolution afterwards.
