Cork On Ice | Poster Illustrations by Kyle Lambert

Cork On Ice

Poster Illustrations

About the brief

The brief for this project was to produce a series of large poster illustrations for the walls of a new ice rink in Cork, Ireland called Cork On Ice. The posters had to be based on an alternate reality, victorian steampunk era. Which basically means vitorian, with advanced technology beyond the capabilities of the day.

The aim of the illustrations was to visualise a magical and spectacular, yet recognisable version of Cork during winter.

From Idea to Production

The illustrations were a close collaboration with the client. I was initially sent a rough outline for each illustration as a starting point. Based on these, I gathered research to help visualise certain aspects of the design. After this, I made a few rough 3D models to work out the compositions and camera angles.

Once the compostions had been aproved, I painted a loose version of each piece to visualise the mood and color scheme of each piece .

On average each piece took around two days to complete. My favourite piece is the Flying Carpet scene which I painted from start to finish in one day. The most challenging piece was the 24 meter main painting, which took nearly 2 weeks.

On the right-hand side you can see 7 of the stages of creating the Space Ship Interior Painting.

Stages

1. Client Sketch
2. Initial responce
3. 3D Composition Model
4. Final 3D model
5. Color render with effects
6. Loose painting
7. Final Painting
